This isn't going too well is it ? I'm delighted thet probably 75% of yachties we meet have a hotmail address, but only a small number of them know how to use the net. We do our best to spread 'The Garboard' [and we have no vested interest by the way, we only want a message board] but you all must help[please]
Few yachts in Fethiye Turkey right now. A big Ausie "Flashdancer 2" is notable.
Has anyone news of s/y Cowrie Dancer en route from Aden?
The Rally Just passed Fethiye, As far As I could tell they had a good night ashore. We saw some fine yachts and look foreward to seeing some again. Remember ....... Fethiye is THE BEST place to winter . Regards to all , John+Bea
I need to know what "enshalla"means?? Aloha, Capt. Tom Bowen [email protected] T H A N K S Armata's comments : It means 'God willing' or' If God wills it'
From John "Sea Thrift" I guess that Tom was having a dog at the spelling. The word is usually spelt "Inshalla" and indeed I know of two boats of that name. However thats how Gary's boat was named when he bought it . Regards to all.
DIG, Not Dog !!

Hi everyone, Firstly apologies for the large group email, but cafes are now sparse and rather expensive AND THIS ONE IS SOOOO SLOW. This is the only way we can keep in touch with you all. Good luck to all Malahide sailors in the Autumn League, Turnabout needs it most considering they are once again without their most amazing exceptionally gifted sail trimmer - who makes the pre race coffee now lads? Actually Naomi 's the only Turnabout crew we have an address for so could someone pass this mail on to the rest of them? Damien, how was/is Thailand? Could you or Peter show this email to the folks and Darragh whose address needs changing before I add it to the list...Please get Terry's address and send it with the email I waiting for from the family. Big Ears Belly, when's the move happening? How thick is the winter snow in New Jersey? Can ye get skis fer yer bike? Bob & Brenda, good luck with your pond crossing and thanks for the news from Aguadulce. You may meet a friend of ours in St. Lucia, Mike congrats on the new job and keep an eye out for Bob and Brenda on Oysterlove, a navy blue Oyster 39 ketch. Alison & John, we're seeing lots of interesting birds but haven't a fxxxing clue what they are.....thanks for the fish book. Here is the news! Now with all the jobs done and Larry finally lowered from his winter perch at the top of the mast (he only went up there to spy on the rest of you in Larnaca ye know), Freedom's Red Sea adventures have begun. Beginning on the 8th September we had a good sail which brought us to Port Said. The last part of the sail was interesting in the hours of darkness dodging our way through the fishing fleet, oil rigs and the ships making their way to the Suez. We tied up in "Port Fouad Yacht Club" which is grotty and filthy and spoke to our agent who arranges the transit and visas and fought off insistent requests for backsheesh. Backsheesh is a "present" usually in the shape of a pack of Marlboro which is asked for on the flimsiest of excuses, like getting up in the morning. Our first pilot for the canal transit joined us at 9 o'clock the following morning and we headed off. So many horror stories abound about pilots greed for excessive backsheesh, thieving, incompetence, and amorous advances towards the crew (male on one occasion!) that we couldn't wait to see what ours would get up to. He just did his job and asked for nothing except the standard "pilots present" at the end of the day. We were almost disappointed. We anchored for the night and the next morning our second pilot joined us, a pleasant guy and we got on well. He carried photos of his wife and two children and in return we showed our photos and he pleaded to keep one of them. Larry said no a dozen times and he gave up. During the passage he had the saloon to himself twice so he could pray. When we arrived in Suez we gave him the customary 10 dollars and a packet of cigs But he asked for more because he was a good man. We told him if he was anything less we'd have given him nothing. He did con a can of coke out of us though! We then took a trip to Cairo from Suez. What a crazy place! We got an early morning bus full of friendly helpful Egyptians. When we were buying our tickets though, it was quickly pointed out to us that there were two queues, one for men and another for women. The madness of the most populated city in Africa and Arabia hit us as soon as we stepped off the bus. Rushing all around us were hundreds of people including heavily veiled women and men in dresses, cars, busses, and minibuses with touts roaring their destinations. The noise! The chaos! We had to shout to hear eachother. Eventually we found the cleanest place in Cairo, the Metro. We crammed ourselves into a train to the Egyptian Museum and went to say hello some Pharaohs. We spent most of the day there. It's amazing to look at the statues, the intricate burial caskets and the amazing gold masks and realise that these flawless works of art were created up to 5000 years ago. We later had a beer and a meal and easily missed the bus back to Suez. After some panic we discovered there were mini buses going to Suez. This information we learned from a coach driver on his way home who offered to give us a lift in his empty coach to the area where the mini bus leaves. The area is a place that comes alive from midnight onwards, full of rubbish , shops, tea rooms, dubious characters and misfits but at no time did we feel intimidated, we just patiently waited on this street corner for a mini bus we were assured would soon appear. There was no queue just ourselves and a soldier. Suddenly a mini bus did appear, horn blowing like the charge of the light brigade and before we had time to collect ourselves at half the population of Egypt appeared and swarmed the bus. Our soldier was confident, there would be another bus, so we relaxed, and those that did not get on board disappeared into the darkness leaving the two of us and soldier boy alone. 20 minutes later another bus arrived and the scene was a replay of the previous experience and even now soldier boy had a worried look. A few minutes later a guy walked up to us, spoke to soldier boy who said follow me and we ran off dodging the traffic and eventually dived aboard bus number 3. The driver proceeded to drive along a pavement across the pavement into the next lane of traffic back to where we had been standing. With satisfaction we watched all these people appearing from nowhere trying to board. I (Larry) was less happy when on our way I reckoned one of the wheel bearings was about to explode and there felt like a lump in one of the tyres. I was giving Tracey odds as to whether we would make it while soldier boy, sitting behind Tracey, was whispering in her ear "I love America". After Cairo we returned to Freedom and set sail for our first coral reef anchorage. We sailed 170 miles with up to 41 knots of wind pushing us through the Straits of Gubal which are littered with oil and gas rigs aswell as shipping. Both of us stayed on watch through out the night, one handsteering as we hurtled down the waves at speed of up to 10 knots with no jib and a double reefed main, and one keeping an eagle eye out for ships, rigs and unlit hazards. The boat behaved well despite the unbalanced sail plan (we couldn't fill the jib being dead down wind) and we almost enjoyed the roller coaster ride. We spent 4 days in the desolate Tawila island anchorage of Endeavour Harbour. There was nothing in sight except sea and sand. The daytime 25 - 30 knot winds increased at night. One night the depth sounder alarm had us leaping from the bunk. Within seconds the engine was on. In the darkness, with no lights around us, we couldn't tell for certain whether or not we had dragged. The anchor seemed well dug in. After ½ an hour of careful observation we decided that the instrument was possessed and went back to bed. The following day the wind lessened and we went snorkelling on the reef. A dolphin appeared and watched us closely but refused to swim with us. We had the occasional fisherman visit us looking for tea bags or cigs in exchange for fish. On our last day some fishermen arrived with two crayfish. They were looking for 25 dollars or a bottle of whisky. We bargained them down to a half bottle of Ouzo which cost us about a pound and a bag of cereal which was banished from Freedom for harbouring a large maggot. We left there yesterday and are currently in the new Egyptian resort town of El Gouna from here we intend to visit Luxor, the site of ancient Thebes and home to temples and tombs galore. From here we will be heading fairly quickly to the Sudan where we have been told the reefs and anchorages are excellent. Well that's enough from us for the time being as we know there is a cafe locally and can never be sure when we will stumble across the next one. Take care all, Love Larry & Tracey.

Good Day! Anyone know of a notice board for yachties in New Zealand? I am trying to locate a sailing vessel(a joshua40 aft cockpit) previously berthed, and forsale in Nelson, south island, New Zealand. She went by the name Sundowner, and was previously owned by Rondi Smith. I am trying to located the boat, and communicate with the new owners. They are from England and sold their boat to purchase Sundowner during the spring of 1999 up in Rongare, North Island, New Zealand. If anyone has any news as to the wereabouts of this boat, or how I may chat with another group for the south pacific, NZ & Australia, please let me know. Thanks for your help. Sincerely,

Is any of the gang from the Limassol Sheraton marina, winter of '87-'88, still afloat in the eastern Med.? I sailed in in the fall aboard Bernard's "Tuiga", left for Gocek in the spring with Joe Burke on "Mermin". The latest issue of "Practical Sailor" has a photo, taken May '01 at a marina in Cyprus, with Ian and Theresa Foster's " Sunshine" in the background. I f they or any of the others recall the yank artist of Monagroulli and would like to get in touch, I 'd like to say hello. David Rohn "Tulip"
Geoff Dixon, You asked about Sea Victory, I was on it in 1982 when it took a boat load of people out of Beirut during the Israeli invasion. Were you on it then? I was on it with my wife and daughter. I was trying to find something on this trip, and heard that Cpt Heath had written a book with someone on that trip. Any clues? Name of the book, author, etc.. Thanks

Could be another dissapointing winter in Fethiye, there was a time when we would have 40 yachts on the anchorage. Dammit, Fethiye has to be one of the best wintering holes in the Eastern Med ! Perfect holding, free anchorage and sometimes free berthing. Seems more people can afford marinas these days, aye well things change. John "Sea Thrift" [as was]

The Skipper (husband) and I read your excellent magazine avidly and wonder if either you or other readers could help us with something. We are going to join the merry band of liveaboards from Spring of next year and we think we have covered as much ground as we are able with preparations. We are going to sail to the Med via the Bay of Biscay, Spain, Portugal and all points down to Greece/Cyprus. However, we seem to have hit a brick wall with communications inasmuch as Service Providers such as AOL etc do not seem able to advise us on the best and most economical method of accessing email. We have a laptop but at present no internet access. Can any readers advise us on how they have dealt with this issue? Do they use the mobile phone to access email, visit cyber cafes (still limited in number we imagine) or has anybody found a service provider who can deal with this knotty problem? Any assistance and information would be appreciated.
